The Story

Ed Gutentag spent the better part of three decades working behind the camera in Hollywood. He has learned and gleaned from some of the greatest filmmakers on the planet — including Spielberg, Cameron, and Michael Mann (Heat, The Insider, Collateral).

It's the kind of career most film students dream about and very few achieve. He shot features, directed commercials, lit scenes alongside stars, and operated cameras in conditions that would make most crews pause — and along the way became a storyteller first, a cinematographer second.

His credits include work on The Shawshank Redemption, War of the Worlds and Ant-Man. He directed a PSA for the Prince Charles Rainforest Trust alongside Harrison Ford and Robin Williams. He placed film cameras inside a waterproof crash housing, inside a car, launched from the 18th floor of Chicago's Marina Towers for an Allstate national commercial. He traveled to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, to direct a fundraiser documentary for the Orchestre Symphonique Kimbanguiste as sole cinematographer.
